Our Cruising season begins May 15-July 15. Come cruising with full crew and captain onboard Talofa to the Islands off La Paz, Mexico. These Islands are truly a well kept secret and our professional crew know all the best anchorages!!!!

Talofa hosted a private party for 20 women who have second homes here in Los Cabos or who were visiting. The evening was quite a success and full of ADVENTURE. Sailing on the SEA OF CORTEZ is always a treat especially when the wind blows. The women pitched in and help raise the sails. We love participation onborad Talofa. On our downwind sail to Cabo del Sol we flew…. On our way back up to Cabo, the winds picked up to over 20 knots which provided quite a thrill for everyone!!!!
TALOFA is a SAILING VESSEL and the more wind the better!! The comraderie, the sunset and the great sailing remains in everyone’s memory as sensational!! Thanks everyone for choosing Talofa Tall Ship.

In these challenging times, we are asking from all of you who have sailed on board Talofa or know her some way, for your help. We ask that you give what money you can or volunteer time to our Maintenance Fund Program for Summer 2009.

TALOFA TALL SHIP

In order to keep our historic sailing ship alive and well, maintenance is a top priority. Talofa needs new bottom paint. Fresh bottom paint must be applied every 1 to 2 years and is critical for keeping the wood healthy.

I hope all you TALOFANS can open your hearts again to Talofa….Small amounts add up so you can give what ever you can and be a part of the Famous TALL SHIP TALOFA Family…..

ON MARCH 14, CAPTAIN CACTUS, BETSY AND CREW TOOK THE LIGAMAC SCHOLARSHIP GIRLS SAILING ON BOARD TALOFA. MOST OF THE GIRLS HADN’T BEEN ON A BOAT MUCH LESS A TALL SHIP! WE GAVE THEM OUR SAIL TRAINING PROGRAM WHERE EVERYONE TAKES A STATION AND LEARNS HOW TO SAIL OUR BEAUTIFUL SHIP. AS YOU CAN SEE, EVERYONE WAS VERY ENTHUSIASTIC AND PLEASED WHEN THEY RECEIVED A CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT AT THE END OF THE ARDUOUS SAIL.

Liga M.A.C. is a registered Mexican charitable organization that is made up of Mexican, American and Canadian members. They organize fundraising events in order to assist members of the San Jose del Cabo community. “Mano con mano” is a helping hand offered to a hand in need.

On Feb. 15th Talofa took 22 orphans for a sail on board Talofa. Captain Cactus and I wanted to share our ship and this amazing enviornment with them. The boys were trully delightful, well mannered and trully happy to be on board. We always have the kids interact with us by hauling lines, steering the ship and feeling apart of the crew. A hardy lunch of Hot dogs and juice were served before heading back.

Talofa hosted a wonderful event for the children under care with the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. Please see their website www.loscaboschildren.org.

Captain Cactus and I thoroughly ejoy having kids off all ages on board TALOFA. We know how much the children will enjoy this adventure because we have had thousands on board our ship. But these children are special. They are receiving needed medical care from Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. Not one of the kids had been on a ship nor on the ocean before. They look back at where they live on land and begin seeing a bigger picture. These children speak only Spanish so it is lucky to have our volunteer Tour Guide, Nacho, onboard to tell the many stories of the ship and of this area.

The Talofa History

Talofa Tall ship

TALOFA was the dream of two brothers, Charles and Chester Carter. During WWI, the two brothers served as Navigation Officers for the Army Transport Service. By happenstance, Charles’ vessel stopped briefly for engine troubles in the South Pacific Islands and he noticed a discoloration of the water and small bubbles continuously rising to the surface.

German Raider ships ran rampant in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans during this war and these ships sunk many foreign cargo ships. After the war, research of Allied information and German archives corroborated the location, cargo and identification of the ship. The discoloration in the water was sunken cargo of copper ingots.

The Carter brothers believed they could retire from their treasure hunting efforts and have a great sea adventure. But first, they had to build the vessel that could accomplish their dream.

TALOFA began in the minds and hearts of the Carter brothers and slowly evolved into one of the “strongest, toughest, private sailboats constructed in the 20th Century in America – possibly in the world” (Joseph Bagley, master wooden ship constructor). Her ribs were sawed to shape and bolted together in sections. 8” x 8” square and 8” apart. She has inside clamps, full hull length, 6”x 12”, not nailed, but riveted with ¾ “ thick iron drift rods and clinch rings. “it is just wood holding the iron together” joked Winn Joseph Bagley, son of Joseph Bagley, the young observer in his father’s shipyard. After all, she was built to retrieve treasure amongst the corral reefs of the South Pacific Island

But “Lady Luck” was not in the Carter’s cards. They and others worked on her with limited funds for over 14 years but could never finished her. WWII began and she took up valuable space in the shipyard so had to be launched without rigging. She became an unfinished live aboard for the aging Carter brothers in the Oakland Estuary

Several owners and many years later, TALOFA is privately owned after having been completely refitted and restored as an original yacht of her day. She is now working in the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico doing eco-tours, adventure cruises, and sail training.
